A committee in Conroe is collecting donations for a life-size bronze statue of Dr. Walter "Wally" Wilkerson and his wife, Neddie Jane. The statue would stand at Founders Plaza downtown. Montgomery County sculptor Craig Campobella plans to show the couple holding hands.
The project is still in fundraising, and no completion date has been announced. The committee is working with the nonprofit Conroe Live to collect community contributions.
Wilkerson was a physician and Navy veteran who chaired the Montgomery County Republican Party for 56 years. Neddie Jane taught and volunteered with local organizations. The couple both supported the Salvation Army.
