The Denton County Sheriff's Office warned residents on social media Thursday about a fake website linked to scammers. The office said the site copies its official page and asks visitors to enter their name to search for active warrants. Scammers often call victims, refer them to the site, Dentoncountysheriff.org, and explain how to look themselves up.
The office said phone numbers listed on the fake site are not connected to Denton County. It said official county government websites use the ".gov" domain, not ".org." Visitors should check web addresses carefully before clicking or sharing personal information.
The office said law enforcement will never call to say a person has an arrest warrant and ask them to verify it on a suspicious website or act immediately. It advised people never to share personal or financial information on suspicious sites, never to send money in response to arrest threats over the phone, and to hang up on suspicious calls.
