Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala said an officer was shot numerous times Thursday morning at the West Oak Apartments in the 200 block of Fig Drive. Ayala said the call came in around 9:10 a.m. about a 21-year-old man acting erratically. He said the man opened fire on the first officer to arrive, using a pistol and an assault rifle. Ayala said the call involved a domestic dispute between the man, two women and their brother.

Ayala said other officers reached the wounded officer, pulled him to cover and began medical treatment. The officer was taken to DHR Health, where he is receiving care. Ayala said officers set up a perimeter and kept receiving gunfire before entering the apartment, where they found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The officer has not been identified.

Ayala called the incident critical and dangerous. He said there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the situation is still developing.
