A San Antonio man, James Kearns, was sentenced to 19 years in prison after a jury found him guilty in the death of Karlton Walker, according to the Bexar County criminal district attorney's office. Kearns was convicted of intoxication manslaughter, manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid. The sentence was handed down last week after a weeklong trial. It is one year less than the maximum 20-year sentence for the charges.
The office said that in March 2017, Walker was walking on a sidewalk when a vehicle driven by Kearns struck him and threw him about 25 feet. Kearns left the scene and later returned on foot. He then went to a nearby gas station to buy coffee before driving back to the scene, where law enforcement officers arrested him.
