Dilley senior Josiah Benavides placed tenth overall at the Region IV-2A cross country meet in Corpus Christi on Monday, October 26, earning a spot at the UIL State Cross Country Championships in Round Rock. It is his second straight trip to the state meet.
Dilley boys finished fifth in the region, eight points short of qualifying as a team for state. The Dilley girls team placed 12th. Benavides ran 17:43.97, according to race results. Teammates Robert Surles, Ramiro Ochoa, Shawn Rodriguez, Guadalupe Rodriguez and Ethan Hernandez also ran in the race.
Dilley head coach Jordan Hernandez said Benavides stayed near the front throughout the race on a difficult course. Hernandez said regional competition is strong and leaves little room for mistakes.
