A second person has died from injuries in an August three-vehicle crash in Victoria. Laquanda Callis, 44, died Tuesday after she was hospitalized with serious injuries from the Aug. 12 crash at Sam Houston Drive and Lilac Lane, according to her family.
The Victoria Police Department said one intoxication assault charge against Xavier Cantu, 22, will be upgraded to intoxication manslaughter. Police said Cantu was driving a pickup in the 3800 block of Sam Houston Drive when it hit an SUV driven by Terrence Cubit, 26. Callis and a 12-year-old girl were passengers in the SUV. The SUV hit a utility pole near Lilac Lane. Cubit died at the scene. Callis and the girl were taken to an out-of-town hospital with serious injuries.
Police said Cantu's pickup then veered into oncoming traffic and hit another pickup driven by Gary Bennett, 72. Police did not say whether Bennett was hurt. Officers arrested Cantu after his vehicle stopped in a private driveway, and he was booked into the Victoria County Jail. Jail records earlier listed one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle. With the upgrade, Cantu is expected to face two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault, pending any further changes to the case.
