Wayland Baptist University's board of trustees has decided to close the university's Amarillo location through a teach-out process that begins Dec. 31, 2026. The university said market changes led to the decision. The Amarillo location opened 50 years ago to serve nontraditional students.
The campus serves 28 students, who will be allowed to complete their degrees at no additional cost caused by the change, the university said in a follow-up email to the Baptist Standard. The university will stop enrolling new students at the Amarillo location starting Nov. 4. Wayland plans to shift the location primarily to online instruction.
Christy Reed, Lubbock campus dean, is overseeing the process. She said the university will work individually with affected students on remaining degree requirements and completion options. The university said all Amarillo faculty are adjunct, so no tenured professors will be affected. The university also said it does not expect additional satellite closures. Wayland closed its Alaska campus last year for similar market reasons.
