Wayland Baptist University canceled classes on its Plainview campus on Wednesday, Nov. 4, after a gas leak near the intersection of Seventh and Quincy streets shortly after 9 a.m., the university said in a press release.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Cindy McClenagan told faculty, staff and students in an email that campus service and a safe return to buildings and residence halls would likely not happen until 2 p.m. that day. Offices stayed closed for the rest of the day. Faculty and staff could leave campus if they did not need to start a vehicle on the east side, or if someone could pick them up from Laney and take them to a safe location.
Students were told to go to the Laney Student Activity Center and avoid the affected side of campus until they were notified it was safe to return. A SafeZone alert went out to students and employees at 9:22 a.m. The university said it evacuated the Plainview campus shortly after the leak was reported.
