North East Independent School District officials confirmed on Tuesday that Sgt. George Teniente, Det. Leticia Sanchez and Officer Michael Luna each received three-day suspensions and reprimands for their roles in the response to a threat against a local school. Service records indicate that Sgt. Moses Suarez and Sgt. Reyes Bermea separated from the district's police department on Sept. 24, almost one month after the initial incident. The district has not released details of their infractions.
The departures and discipline follow the arrest of 22-year-old Nathaniel Michael Carrasco. According to an arrest affidavit, he allegedly used an artificial intelligence platform to generate detailed threats of a mass shooting at an elementary school. An arrest warrant charges him with terroristic threat causing public fear of serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony.
The affidavit says the FBI alerted local law enforcement on Aug. 28 about threatening queries made during an AI chat on Aug. 11. Investigators said Carrasco used Anthropic AI to express an intent to obtain a firearm and carry out a shooting targeting students at Serna Elementary School.
Serna Elementary Principal Jennifer Lomas said the school was not told about the specific threat until Sunday evening, when news coverage made it public. Lomas said Carrasco was arrested Sunday. Law enforcement and district officials are working to determine why the school received only partial information about the threat.
