Boyd ISD trustees allege that school resource officer Ray Cannon violated the district's contract with the City of Boyd and the Boyd Police Department by giving media interviews about a hazing investigation at Boyd High School. The district has asked that he be removed from the SRO role.
The city has rejected that request. An internal review found no violations of the SRO agreement, city policy or police department policy. City Manager Dwayne Taylor said in an email to the Messenger that the review was limited to administrative and contractual issues and that reassignment was not warranted at this time. He said the city would not speculate about any party's motivations.
Police said four Boyd High School students were arrested Sept. 15 after a 14-year-old teammate was allegedly taken into a field house locker room. Two 17-year-old students face state jail felony charges as adults, and the other two are charged as juveniles. Superintendent Tom Woody said the interviews, a 21-minute press conference held during school hours, were not held on Cannon's assigned campus, which he said raised two contract concerns. The contract sets SRO hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.
