A house fire in Van Zandt County killed four children early Wednesday, according to the county fire marshal's office. Crews from Canton, South Van Zandt, Ben Wheeler and Wills Point were sent to the home near County Road 4127 and 4128 shortly after 12:30 a.m. Fire Marshal Kevin Palmer said three children, two boys ages 5 and 8 and a 3-year-old girl, died at the scene. Officials later confirmed that a 9-year-old boy, who had been taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, also died.
The story says three people escaped the burning home on their own. Crews broke through an exterior wall to reach the children, according to the fire marshal's office. An adult was also taken to Parkland Hospital, and two other occupants were taken to a hospital for precautionary care.
The Van Zandt County Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire. Officials said more information may be released as the investigation continues.
