The Nave Museum in Victoria held its Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration on Saturday, returning after a hiatus of several years. Nine altars were displayed in the museum's exhibit, "The Art of Remembering."
One altar honored Dr. Antonio Aguirre, a former superintendent of the Austwell-Tivoli Independent School District who retired in 2018 and died of cancer two years ago. His childhood friend, John Moraida, built the altar, which includes family photographs and mementos. Moraida said the two had made a promise about the altars about a decade ago.
Tim Hornback, the museum's new executive director, said the board of directors wanted to revive the celebration as part of the Nave's 50th anniversary. Neither Moraida nor Hornback knew why the event had been discontinued.
