The Citadelle Art Museum in Canadian has received its first federal grant in 17 years of operation. The two-year award comes from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Museum officials began the application in March, which included merit reviews, documentation and accounting procedures required by federal standards. Museum leaders were notified of the approval last month.
Wendie Cook, the museum's executive director, said this is the museum's first federal grant. She said the award is in the museum's congressional district in the Texas Panhandle. Officials said federal funding covers back-end operating costs that private donations often do not.
The funds will be used to inventory items, track ethical provenance for permanent exhibits and works in storage, and digitize the collection. Cook said public contributions usually support traveling educational programs and mobile classrooms, which reach students in 25 of the Panhandle's 26 counties. The museum has until 2028 to spend the funds and will send progress reports to federal authorities during the grant period.
