Nathan Martinez, 22, is on trial for murder in the Aug. 15, 2023, shooting that killed 17-year-old Julian Robledo. Martinez is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A murder conviction could carry a sentence of up to life in prison. He is separately charged with capital murder in a 2022 shooting that killed two people at a family gathering on the South Side. No trial date has been set in that case. Testimony began Tuesday in the 187th District Court.
Prosecutor Meghan Galloway told jurors that the driver of a silver sedan fired 16 shots at Robledo's mother, Alyssa Gomez, and Robledo at their home in the 2800 block of Mosscircle, near South San High School. Robledo was shot in the head and died at a hospital two days later. Gomez was not hurt. Galloway said Gomez was unable to identify Martinez, but that the evidence points to him. Jurors also watched body-camera footage from an officer at the scene.
Galloway said police found blood and shell casings at an apartment complex where Martinez lived on the day Robledo died. She said Martinez, who arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound, was uncooperative with officers. Galloway also said detectives linked a weapon found in a October 2023 traffic stop to casings from both the Mosscircle shooting and the apartment complex. Martinez's defense attorneys, Charles Bunk and Suzanne Kramer, did not give an opening statement.
