Work on the Callahan County Courthouse is almost complete, according to county officials. County Auditor Sandra Rose said voters approved funding for the project in 2020, and construction started after a 2021 groundbreaking. The building was built in 1929.
Rose said the work addressed aging systems and accessibility. Before the renovation, the building had no hot water, and its elevator dated to the 1950s and did not meet ADA standards. The courthouse now has an accessible ramp and elevator. A geothermal system is designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility costs. The Texas Historical Commission contributed $4.6 million and helped guide the preservation work.
Judge Donald Lane said the people of Callahan County can be proud of the building. The county clerk's office has moved back into the courthouse for early voting. Rose said the remaining finishing touches should be done soon, with more staff moving back in afterward. The county plans to hold a rededication event with the Texas Historical Commission once the renovation is finished.
