CHRISTUS Health has opened the first dedicated endocrinology clinic in Sulphur Springs, according to the health system. The clinic is at 103 Medical Circle, building 5A. A blessing and ribbon-cutting were held Oct. 12, and the clinic began seeing patients Oct. 13.

Dr. Shamima Akter leads the program. She is a specialist in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, and has training and experience in internal medicine. Endocrinology covers conditions involving the body's hormones, including diabetes, thyroid disorders and osteoporosis.

Kathey Brown, director of clinic operations, said the services give patients in Sulphur Springs and nearby communities specialized care closer to home. Akter said her goal is to work with each patient to understand their needs and build a plan to manage their condition.
