Eurey Smith, a United States Postal Service employee, was charged this week with mail theft, according to court proceedings. Court documents state that authorities found mail in his personal vehicle when they arrested him, including checks meant for the Spring Branch ISD tax assessor. Investigators spent months looking into Smith's activities before the arrest.

During a court hearing, a prosecutor said Smith was found with 12 pieces of mail, including five checks issued to the Spring Branch ISD tax assessor. The prosecutor also said an ongoing investigation has found more than 220 checks, totaling over $4 million, have been compromised, and that Smith will likely face additional, more serious charges. Law enforcement officials said people who steal checks often change the payee's name and deposit the money into their own accounts.

Spring Branch ISD said it worked with postal inspectors and the Memorial Villages Police Department during the investigation. The USPS confirmed Smith remains an employee but is not currently working at the post office on Town and Country Way, where he worked. Prosecutors asked the court to bar Smith from visiting any post office, especially that one. Smith is expected to appear in court next week.
