A strong storm system is forecast to bring tropical moisture and widespread rain to West Texas and southeast New Mexico, with a threat of flash flooding late Thursday and Friday. A Flood Watch covers the Permian Basin, Trans-Pecos, Big Bend and Lea County, New Mexico, from Thursday morning to Friday morning.
Forecasters expect rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated amounts up to 4 to 5 inches or more, which could cause flash flooding. Rain is expected to start Thursday morning and continue into Friday afternoon. The heaviest rain and highest flooding risk are expected Thursday evening into Friday morning.
Residents were urged to prepare for heavy rain, expect traffic delays and have a plan in case they are caught in a flash flood.
