Karen McGahen said she lost her class ring in 1985 while on a day trip to Amarillo with her infant daughter, Shelby. She said she did not notice it was missing until that evening, after the family had returned home to Pampa. The ring had belonged to her mother and held her grandmother's birthstone.

The ring was found in Amarillo and kept by the finder, who later died. The finder's daughter, Linn, inherited it and mailed it to Lynnae Borger, a friend from school who lives in Pampa, to help find its owner. Borger said the ring was found in Amarillo and that her friend's mother had kept it in a jewelry box.

Borger said she first called Jostens, the ring maker, but the company did not keep records going back to 1981. She was told to check school yearbooks for a photo matching the ring's details.
