Democratic candidates won several top statewide races in Texas in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. State Rep. Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott. State Rep. James Talarico beat Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. The report said Republicans had held every statewide elected office since the late 1990s.
Democratic state Rep. Vikki Goodwin declared victory over three-term Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. The report said Goodwin may not have the same legislative power as Patrick, because the Senate sets its operating rules at the start of each legislative session. It said Senate Republicans hold strong influence in the chamber and could vote to change rules that limit the lieutenant governor's authority over committee appointments and bill assignments.
The report also said Tarrant, Denton and Collin counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth area all voted for statewide Democratic candidates. Dallas County remained Democratic, as it has been. All three suburban counties had voted for Republicans in 2024.
