A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to the 2012 murder of Francisco Roque, according to KLTV. The killing happened on April 14, 2012.

Longview police said an argument broke out between Jose Amaro Olivarez, then 26, and Roque, then 38. A witness said Olivarez had been drinking and shot Roque twice. Olivarez left the scene before police arrived, and Roque died at a hospital from his injuries.

Investigators said Olivarez fled to Mexico by bus after learning he was a suspect. He was indicted in 2017 and was arrested by U.S. Marshals in January 2026. He was then extradited to the United States.

Members of Roque's family spoke in court Thursday. One family member said, "Twenty years is not enough at all." Roque's daughters said it was devastating to see Olivarez without a scratch after 14 years. Olivarez must serve at least half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He will be deported once released.
