Guest speaker Alana Robertson, of Oceans Behavioral Hospital in Lufkin, spoke about seasonal depression, also called Seasonal Affective Disorder. She said it is a type of depression that often occurs in fall and winter when daylight decreases. Symptoms can include persistent sadness, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, and trouble concentrating. Robertson said anyone can be affected and that older adults may face added challenges during colder months.
Attendees were encouraged to get natural sunlight when possible, stay active, keep a regular sleep schedule, eat nutritious meals and spend time with family and friends. Organizers said people should reach out for support, and that help is available.
