Williamson County commissioners approved a study of school crosswalk safety in the county's unincorporated areas at their Oct. 27 meeting. County Engineer Adam Boatright will evaluate school crosswalks on county-maintained roadways. He will work with school districts and regional partners to identify possible safety projects and apply for funding, according to a county news release. Boatright said there are about 35 schools on county-maintained roads. The study is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

County Judge Steve Snell said at the meeting that two students were hit by cars while using school crosswalks last spring. Snell said crossing guards generally cover crosswalks 30 minutes before and after school, but students also use these roads at other times. He said the county does not want any child to be hurt.

The county also applied this year for additional Safe Streets and Roads for All federal grant funding for school crosswalk safety improvements.
