Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and Senator-elect James Talarico celebrated their wins Tuesday night at an Austin-area Whataburger restaurant, according to a video shared by Hinojosa. The video shows the two sharing a booth with sodas, surrounded by supporters.
Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, who served the state for 12 years. She is the first Latina to be elected governor of Texas and the first Democrat to win the office in more than 30 years. She will be the third woman to serve as governor, after Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, who served from 1925 to 1927 and from 1933 to 1935, and Ann Richards, who served from 1991 to 1995.
Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton. He is the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate race since 1988.
