Amarillo Tribune reporter Nell Williams attended the High Plains Republican Women's watch party on Election night. She described the mood of the roughly 100 attendees as upbeat, even as results showed Democrats leading several state and federal races. Republican Holly Jeffreys, who won the Texas House District 86 race, said she believes the Panhandle will still be in good shape.
Democrat Timothy Gassaway won the Potter County Commissioner for Precinct Four seat, the only county-level office won by a Democrat. Democrat Warren Coble Sr. previously held the seat. Democrats won the statewide races for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller and Agriculture Commissioner, among others. According to the number of races the Associated Press has called, Democrats also now control the Texas House of Representatives.
In Potter and Randall counties, Republican votes outnumbered Democratic votes by about 29,000, according to initial numbers. Democratic candidates in high-ballot races received tens of thousands more votes than candidates in the same races in past midterm elections. Republican Ronny Jackson earned a similar number of votes as in the 2022 midterm and won reelection to the U.S. House.
