Voters in Kansas, South Carolina, Texas, Ohio and Iowa backed Democrats for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, and in some of those states for governor as well. President Donald Trump won all five states two years ago in the presidential election.

Kansas elected a Democratic senator for the first time since 1932. South Carolina and Texas also saw significant Democratic victories, and Democrats took control in Iowa and Ohio.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described it as a "volatile political era." The results raise the question of whether the shift will last or reflect Trump's unpopularity and rising living costs.
