According to Rutgers University's Center for American Women and Politics, voters in 17 states elected a female governor on Tuesday, a new record. Among the projected winners is Democrat Gina Hinojosa in Texas, who would become the state's first Latina governor.

Other firsts were projected in several states. Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms is projected to become Georgia's first female governor, and Democrat Amy Acton is projected to be Ohio's first woman elected governor. Democrat Peggy Flanagan is projected to become the first Native American woman in the U.S. Senate, from Minnesota.

The center said 139 women are projected to serve in the 120th Congress, which begins in January. That is down slightly from the 152 women serving now.
