An 18-year-old man was killed early in the morning after his car hit a pole at South Sam Houston Parkway West and South Post Oak Road, according to Houston police. Southwest Patrol officers responded to the single-vehicle crash at about 3 a.m.

An off-duty officer waiting at a traffic light told investigators the car was traveling about 80 mph when it went through the intersection and hit the pole. Police said the impact split the older-model Audi sedan in half and ejected the driver.

Houston Fire Department personnel tried lifesaving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not determined whether alcohol was a factor. Personal belongings found in the car suggested the driver may have been coming from a Halloween party, but police have not confirmed that.
