The Uvalde City Council will consider renewing a 10-year lease with Texas A&M University for land that houses the Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center at Uvalde. The 6 p.m. meeting on Oct. 27 will be held at city hall after four straight meetings were held at the Willie De Leon Civic Center. Mayor Hector Luevano told the Leader-News the earlier meetings moved because of air conditioning problems, and said the city hall system is now running.
Under a draft interlocal agreement in the city's agenda packet, Texas A&M would lease two tracts from the city, one of 58 acres and one of 50 acres, for $2,705 a year. The center conducts agricultural research, including trials of corn, wheat and cotton varieties and studies on fertilization, cropping systems and irrigation for specialty crops.
The council also will follow up on two items from its Oct. 13 meeting. One is how to cast the city's votes for two candidates for the Uvalde County Appraisal District board. The other is possible changes to the city's Animal Welfare Board ordinance, which Councilman Con Mims proposed, covering board members' terms, membership and residency requirements. Mims proposed seven candidates for board appointments, and the council could consider others. The agenda also includes a Uvalde Police Department request to make departmental purchases of up to $290,700 using Operation Lone Star grant funds, and two payment requests to Alvin E. Stock Contractors LLC for work on the Regional Behavioral Crisis Center.
