Members of the Potter County Republican Party have filed a federal lawsuit against the county's elections administrator. The suit asks a judge to require that every paper ballot be hand counted before election results are finalized, and that the rule apply to all 254 Texas counties. The lawsuit says electronic voting machines could be manipulated. President Donald Trump has also raised concerns about voting machines in the past, according to the report.
San Antonio voting rights attorney Joaquin Gonzalez said the outcome is unlikely. He said the plaintiffs do not allege that any Texas voting machine has miscounted votes in the past or that past results were altered. Gonzalez said the plaintiffs would need more evidence to show an imminent threat. Potter County officials have 21 days to respond to the lawsuit before a judge can rule, and the plaintiffs have not asked for an earlier response.
Chris McGinn, president of the Texas Association of County Election Officials, said in a statement that the lawsuit's allegations are baseless. He said the Texas Legislature has addressed the concerns through election integrity and transparency laws. Potter County GOP chair Daniel Rogers and attorney Jared Woodfill did not respond to requests for comment.
