Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa took an early lead over Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday in Texas' closely watched governor's race. Voters are deciding whether to extend more than three decades of Republican control of the state's highest office.

With an estimated 23% of votes counted, Hinojosa had 1,365,859 votes, or 57.8%. Abbott had 964,791 votes, or 40.9%. The figures come from Associated Press election-night results, and show Hinojosa ahead by 401,068 votes.

The election had not been called in the reported snapshot. The margin could change substantially as more counties report Election Day votes.
