Republican Jace Yarbrough and Democrat Dan Barrios are competing for Texas' 32nd Congressional District seat in the Nov. 3 general election. The candidates offer different approaches to federal spending, immigration and the economy.

Yarbrough said the government should cut wasteful spending and end programs that do not produce results, rather than raise taxes. Barrios said lawmakers should review federal programs, reduce waste and close tax loopholes. He also called for examining both spending and revenue to address the federal debt, which exceeds $40 trillion.

Yarbrough said he wants stronger enforcement of federal law and opposes amnesty. Barrios named affordability as the district's biggest challenge, pointing to housing, healthcare, education and child-rearing costs. He proposed lowering prescription drug costs and increasing the housing supply.

Both candidates said Congress has a responsibility to oversee decisions about war, while the president can respond to immediate threats. Barrios said Congress should vote on whether to authorize continued military action in Iran. Early voting runs through Oct. 30.
