Nearly half of registered voters in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties have already cast ballots ahead of Election Day. In Travis County, more than 450,000 people have voted early in person or by mail.

According to the Office of the Texas Secretary of State, the total number of Travis County voters is the highest for a midterm election since 1998, the earliest year with available data. Data from the Travis County clerk and the secretary of state also show the county's early turnout is higher than its early turnout for the 2012 presidential election. It is about 100,000 voters above the 2022 midterm.

KUT News previously reported that primary turnout was the highest since 2008. A backlog in voter registrations followed a failure by the Department of Public Safety to send records to counties across the state. Celia Israel, Travis County's tax assessor-collector, said her office finished entering voter registrations last week. Some voters who were registered but not yet in the system had to submit provisional ballots.
