Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday, ending his bid for a fourth term. The story said no Democrat has held the governor's office in Texas this century.

In her victory speech before 11 p.m., Hinojosa said, "We did it. Everything is bigger, including the shock of this win. We shocked the world tonight." The story said supporters could be heard sobbing at the event.

Hinojosa said she was not bothered by people doubting her, but by people doubting "us." She also referred to heavy spending on attack ads and said she had been dismissed many times, while adding that her faith in Texas never wavered.
