Texas Familias Council, a nonprofit based in Montgomery County, has worked with communities since 2011 through natural disasters, public health crises and policy changes, the group said. It is now providing nonpartisan outreach at voter registration events. This year it has teamed up with the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County to reach more people.
Founding President Maria Banos Jordan said the partnerships help the group reach deeper into communities. She said Latino residents in Montgomery County have lower turnout on average than the general voting population. She also said the group is receiving thousands of new families in the county each month, and that many may not know local leaders or where to vote.
Banos Jordan said that in Texas, the Latino population tends to vote about ten points lower than the general population. After Election Day, the council plans to continue its work with families. Its planned programs include college mentorship, projects with health centers and school districts, and the first Latino history exhibit in Montgomery County at the Heritage Museum.
