Brantley Conner, 14, died of his injuries, according to a post his stepmother, Tasha Conner, shared online. She wrote that the family is devastated by the loss.
Dayton police said the bus driver, 70-year-old Ricky Eugene Cherry, was arrested hours after the crash. It happened around 6:15 a.m. on Oct. 16 at U.S. 90 and Stilson Road. Police allege that Cherry failed to stop or give aid. He faces a felony charge in Liberty County for allegedly hitting the boy and leaving the scene. Records show he remains in the Liberty County jail.
Dayton ISD Superintendent Dr. Travis Young said in a statement at the time of the crash that the district's thoughts and prayers were with the student and family. He said the district remains committed to providing support while respecting the privacy of those involved.
