Ahead of Election Day, The Texas Tribune spoke with voters across the state about the issues that mattered most to them. In Odessa, an oil-and-gas town in West Texas, voters gave a range of answers.
Many said they were struggling with economic hardship, including higher prices for gas and groceries. Others said their conservative beliefs weighed more heavily in their choices.
Eugenio and Margarita Bersosa, who moved to Odessa from Mexico in 1974, said anti-abortion laws, support for Israel and policies on transgender people mattered more to them than rising costs. They voted for the full Republican ticket. Margarita Bersosa, 75, said some Democrats support abortion and gender transition for young people, which she said conflicts with her religious beliefs.
