Vehicle emissions testing began in Bexar County on Sunday. The requirement is projected to affect nearly 2 million vehicles. Gasoline-powered vehicles between two and 24 model years old must complete an annual emissions test as part of the vehicle registration process. The test costs $18.50.
Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector Albert Uresti said the county does not keep any of the fee. The money goes to the person conducting the test and to the state.
According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, drivers can renew their registration up to 90 days before it expires. Vehicles that need the inspection must complete it within that 90-day renewal period. After passing the test, drivers can renew online, by mail, or in person. The station's list of official inspection locations and a searchable station locator are available on the source's site, and the Texas Department of Public Safety has a question-and-answer guide for Bexar County inspections.
