Texas Republican lawmaker Brian Harrison is urging Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special legislative session to limit the governor's emergency powers. The request comes before Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa takes office.

In an X post, Harrison said Republicans still control the legislature and should use the remaining 10 weeks to pass laws restricting the governor's authority during emergencies. He said current state law could allow a governor to suspend or change statutes and issue orders with the force of law.

Harrison said the legislature should act no matter which party controls the governor's office. He argued that unchecked emergency powers threaten the separation of powers.
