A man accused of shooting and killing 75-year-old Maria Glorida Liceaga at Westover Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Nov. 1 told a nurse, "Nothing happened, nothing happened," as he pushed his mother in a wheelchair toward the exit, according to a San Antonio Police report. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim. Manuel Becerril Espinoza is accused of the killing. Liceaga shared a room with his mother.

The report says a nurse heard an argument in Spanish in the room shortly before a loud bang. Another nurse told investigators that the two women had earlier disagreed about the room's temperature, but that those disagreements had been resolved. The report does not say whether the argument was related to the temperature.

Staff applied pressure to Liceaga's wound until emergency crews arrived. She was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. Police said they found a handgun in a makeshift belt around Espinoza's waist, and that he was wearing what appeared to be body armor. He was arrested about a quarter-mile from the facility. Espinoza told investigators his gun went off while he was walking to a store. Investigators said surveillance video showed him wearing the same clothing seen after the gunshot. His mother gave investigators a different account, saying her son had gone outside with her for a cigarette.
