The El Paso Independent School District has given the Texas Comptroller's Office records that break down students enrolled with a Social Security number and those using a state-approved alternative identification number. EPISD board President Leah Hanany confirmed the district provided the requested records to El Paso Matters. She said the records alone cannot show a student's citizenship status, and that families who do not provide a Social Security number are assigned an alternative number.

According to a news release from state Rep. Vince Perez, the Comptroller's Office told the district not to provide identifying student information. Perez said the office used a financial review of EPISD to request documents unrelated to the district's finances. Comptroller Don Huffines also asked for budgets, payroll records, contracts, a library catalog and board policies on parent complaints about human sexuality curriculum. EPISD is one of four districts under review after Gov. Greg Abbott requested a state financial investigation.

Huffines did not respond to a request for comment. The district did not immediately answer questions about the records and said it would release more details at a Friday news conference. Perez said he had filed a legislative records request. He was joined by the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Save Our School Coalition. Perez cited a 2025 CBS interview in which Huffines said undocumented students should "go home."
