The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is asking waterfowl hunters to help protect Texas water bodies from aquatic invasive species. The agency said these species can lower the quality of waterfowl habitat, block recreational access and harm ecosystems and infrastructure.

TPWD said hunters can help by taking a few minutes to clean, drain and dry boats, trailers, decoys and other gear before traveling from lake to lake. The agency said invasive plants such as giant salvinia and zebra mussels can catch on boats, trailers and tow vehicles and be moved to new waters. Waders, decoy bags and marsh sleds should also be checked.

Tips from recent studies include using a wet/dry vacuum to remove plants before rinsing, using a hose and stiff brush to clean waders and boot treads, and fully draining decoys. The agency said older, cracked decoys that hold water may benefit from added drain holes. A video showing how to clean, drain and dry gear is available on the TPWD YouTube channel.
