The Elgin City Council appointed former councilwoman Sue Brasher to fill the vacant Ward 4 seat. The council voted 6-3 on Oct. 27 to select her from three applicants. Brasher previously served 12 years on the council.
The council accepted the resignation of Brenda Piña on Sept. 30. Piña had been elected without opposition in May. She agreed to keep serving until a replacement was named. Earlier, Piña said her decision to step down was prompted by friction with fellow council members over her attendance and communications.
Brasher said she wants to make sure Ward 4 has representation. She cited her past council service and 10 years with the Elgin Economic Development Corp. as qualifications. She also works full time for the Lower Colorado River Authority, where she has worked 26 years. Voters will choose someone to serve the rest of Piña's term in a special election in May 2027. That term expires in May 2028. Brad Barnard and Deborah Wahrmund also applied for the seat.
