The Elgin Independent School District board will meet Thursday, Nov. 5, to consider next steps after the arrest of Superintendent Christopher Bailey on a driving-under-the-influence charge. The district said Bailey was detained earlier this week while traveling home from Austin. The district said Bailey, 47, who became superintendent on Sept. 1, told staff and families about the arrest himself and has taken full responsibility.

According to media reports, Bailey was booked into the Travis County Jail at 3:43 a.m. Oct. 29 on a DUI/alcohol charge and was released after posting a $4,000 bond. The district said reports that Bailey had been arrested for driving while intoxicated before stemmed from a clerical error in Travis County records.

Board President Byron Mitchell said trustees take the matter seriously and that Bailey has been open with school officials. Mitchell said the board has measures in place under its policies. "The work of serving Elgin ISD students continues without interruption," Mitchell said. According to an arrest affidavit, a Manor police officer reported seeing a truck weaving in the left lane of U.S. 290 around 1:45 a.m. Oct. 29.
