An Edinburg police officer who was shot multiple times Thursday is in stable condition after surgery, the city said Friday morning. The officer, 40, responded at 9:10 a.m. to West Oak Apartments in the 200 block of Fig Drive after the sisters of 25-year-old Daby Tadeo Ledezma called police to say he was acting erratically. Police had earlier reported his age as 21 and corrected it in Friday's update.
Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala said at a press conference that Ledezma fired a pistol and an assault rifle at the officer. Ayala said Ledezma kept shooting at other responding officers, and that they reached the wounded officer, moved him to cover and gave lifesaving care until emergency medical personnel took him to the hospital. Ayala said Ledezma shot and killed himself at some point during the incident.
Ayala said investigators were interviewing Ledezma's sisters and described the investigation as fluid and ongoing. Police said Ledezma was from Edinburg and was wanted on a probation violation warrant out of North-Central Texas. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, and the Edinburg Police Department is conducting an internal affairs review.
