Ride the Rio, New Braunfels' microtransit system, will begin service at 6 a.m. every day starting Nov. 1, instead of 7 a.m. The 8 p.m. end time will not change, according to a city press release. The city said the earlier start is meant to help commuters, early-shift workers, students and others who depend on on-demand transportation.
The city said more than 74,500 rides have been completed over the past year. About 59% were shared rides, and nearly 30% were provided at a discounted rate. The service has an average rating of 4.9 stars, and 94.6% of ratings are five stars, the release said. In June, the city bought two more minivans, increasing the fleet from eight to 10 vehicles.
Transportation and Construction Services Director Garry Ford said expanding hours is "the next step in providing reliable microtransit transportation." Standard fares are $4 per ride. A $2 rate is available to seniors, veterans, students and people with disabilities. Riders can book through the Rio app or by calling 830-282-3413.
