The San Benito school board is giving Superintendent Fred Perez "good" marks on his job performance, board President Orlando Lopez said Wednesday. Trustees gave Perez his annual evaluation last week and are waiting for board Attorney Tony Torres to compile the results, Lopez said. Lopez said Perez has grown in every area, from curriculum to finance, and described the district's culture as welcoming.

Last year, Perez's "strong" evaluation scores led to a $20,000 raise, bringing his salary to $205,000. Lopez said board members have not yet discussed a pay increase for this year and are waiting for the scores to be compiled.

Perez and board members are setting goals that include raising the district's overall state academic standing. They also plan to focus on three campuses with low state test scores, one of which posted failing marks. Enrollment is another goal, since it helps determine state funding. The district's enrollment is 8,335 this year, down from about 8,524 last year. "One of the biggest issues is enrollment," Lopez said.
