A coach at Barksdale Middle School in Northwest ISD found a bullet on the school's tennis courts on October 28. The courts are at the back of the school grounds. Northwest ISD Superintendent Dr. Mark Foust told parents in a letter that outdoor activities at the back of the school will be temporarily moved to the front or held indoors. Bus routes will also change temporarily, with students dropped off on a different side of the building.
The letter said this is the third time in 2026 that bullets have been found on the campus. In May, a construction crew found a bullet on the school's brick exterior. In July, a bullet broke a window in the press box of the school's football stadium. The school is 1.2 miles north of Quail Creek Gun Range.
In August, the district was granted a temporary restraining order against the gun range. The order requires the range to restrict guns that could fire bullets that reach school grounds. Foust's letter said the order remains in effect. Nick Kort, whose seventh-grade son attends Barksdale, said he supports responsible gun ownership and takes his son to the range to learn gun safety. He said parents should not have to worry about stray bullets reaching their children's school.
