Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that the Internal Revenue Service has approved disaster-related tax relief for 62 Texas counties. The relief follows severe storms and flooding that began July 14. It postpones certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines until Feb. 1, 2027.

According to the IRS, eligible counties include Austin, Brazoria, Colorado, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Matagorda, Waller, Washington and Wharton. The extension covers qualifying individuals who live in those counties and businesses whose principal place of business is there. Taxpayers do not have to show their home or business was damaged to receive it, the IRS said. The agency said it identifies taxpayers with addresses in the covered area and applies the relief automatically.

The new deadline applies to several federal obligations. Taxpayers who received a valid extension to file their 2025 individual income tax returns now have until Feb. 1 to submit them. Certain quarterly estimated tax payments originally due during the relief period are also postponed. The IRS said eligible corporate and partnership returns are included as well.
