Sam Millsap, a Democrat who served as Bexar County District Attorney from 1982 to 1986, endorsed Republican Ashley Foster for the post on Monday. Foster is running against Democrat Luz Elena Chapa. The Express-News editorial board has criticized Chapa for what it called a lack of experience prosecuting cases.
In a statement, Millsap said the future of the office matters more than party loyalty. "After more than 40 years of watching this office and the community it serves, I believe Bexar County needs competent leadership," he said. He also said, "Today, the office faces serious challenges."
Millsap is also known as an outspoken critic of the death penalty. His opposition followed a case his office prosecuted against Ruben Cantu for capital murder. The state executed Cantu in 1992. A Houston Chronicle investigation later raised serious questions about his guilt.
Independent candidate Jason Wolff is also in the race. Some political observers said Wolff could draw conservative votes away from Foster. Early voting continues through Oct. 30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
